Preventive care helps you address health risks before they become more difficult to manage. Routine exams create an opportunity to review your health history, identify recommended cancer screenings, discuss vaccines, and make a practical plan for protecting your long-term well-being.

My Primary Care NP provides preventive care for adults in Bel Air as part of our broader range of services. Lana Kim, DNP, offers physical exams, sports physicals, and Medicare Annual Wellness Visits tailored to your age, medical history, lifestyle, and individual risk factors.

What Is Preventive Care?

Preventive care focuses on maintaining your health, identifying risks, and detecting certain conditions early. These appointments are separate from visits intended to diagnose a new illness or injury.

Depending on your age, health history, and needs, preventive care may include:

  • A review of your personal and family health history
  • Blood pressure, weight, and other appropriate measurements
  • Recommended laboratory testing
  • Cancer screening and prevention
  • Medication and supplement review
  • Immunization guidance
  • Nutrition and physical activity counseling
  • Mental health and substance-use screening
  • Discussion of sleep, stress, and safety
  • Referrals for additional testing or specialty care

Routine preventive care can help identify concerns before symptoms become obvious and may support earlier treatment.

What Happens During a Physical Exam?

A routine physical exam provides a broad review of your current health. Lana may ask about new symptoms, medications, previous diagnoses, family history, nutrition, exercise, sleep, alcohol or tobacco use, and other factors that may affect your well-being.

The visit may include appropriate measurements and a physical examination based on your age, medical history, and concerns. Lana can also review which screenings or vaccines may be recommended for you.

If an exam identifies high blood pressure, abnormal blood sugar, high cholesterol, or another ongoing concern, follow-up may continue through chronic disease and medication management.

What Is Included in a Sports Physical?

A sports physical focuses on whether you can participate in athletic activity safely. It may include a review of your medical history, previous injuries, current symptoms, medications, heart and lung health, joints, strength, flexibility, and other factors related to physical activity.

A sports physical does not replace a comprehensive routine checkup. It is designed to assess participation-related risks rather than address every preventive health need.

Bring any required forms to your appointment and complete your portion in advance when possible. You should also bring information about prior injuries, surgeries, chronic conditions, and medications.

Is a Medicare Annual Wellness Visit a Physical Exam?

No. A Medicare Annual Wellness Visit is a prevention-planning appointment, not a routine head-to-toe physical exam. The visit is used to develop or update a personalized plan based on your current health and risk factors.

The visit may include:

  • A health risk assessment
  • Medical and family history updates
  • Medication and provider-list review
  • Height, weight, BMI, and blood pressure measurements as appropriate
  • Review of fall risk, hearing, daily function, and home safety
  • Cognitive and depression screening
  • A personalized screening schedule
  • Preventive counseling and referrals

Medicare generally covers an Annual Wellness Visit once every 12 months for eligible beneficiaries, but additional services performed during the appointment may result in separate costs. Confirm eligibility and coverage with Medicare or your insurance plan before your visit.
